Have you ever wanted to develop your own game, but think you don’t know enough code, or have enough time? Maybe you just don’t think you have enough experience or that you need to be a developer. However, in an era like today, none of that is true. Anyone can develop games without any previous knowledge of code. This is done with the use of 2 words you’ve probably heard way too much over the past few years - Artificial Intelligence.

With our simple guide, you’ll have your own game up and running in no time. But first, let’s start with the benefits of developing a game for the first time.

Why should I learn to make my own game?

Developing something simple like a game can bring many benefits. And yes, these benefits apply even to those who desire or already have a job that’s not related to programming, computer science, or software engineering. Learning how to create a new game can improve your interpretation skills. In addition, it can be enjoyable and brings a level of productivity with it. In other words, you can have fun without feeling like you’re wasting time. Learning new skills improves your mind’s ability to think critically, as well as process and understand crucial concepts. If you keep striving to learn new skills, you’re information processing and speed in completing more trivial tasks will improve by a huge amount. Who knows? These skills have the potential to be your stepladder into the fascinating world of technology. In addition, these skills provide computer science principles and basics. In just a couple of minutes, you’ll have a certain foundation of knowledge regarding software development. You also have the opportunity to monetize your game on platforms like Google Play and Steam.

Steps:

  1. Decide the theme and style of your game. Sketch out your plan and game concept on a piece of paper. Be creative, but remember to be realistic. (Since this is probably your first game, it obviously wouldn’t make sense for you to develop the next Elden Ring game. If you can’t think of anything, we recommend that you stick with the basic blueprint; a classic 2D platformer game. You can add your aesthetics and style to this template.)

  2. Type up your idea in an online document. Summarize in a couple sentences and write your goal and the directions to follow to make it. Be specific. Also, include what programming languages you want to use for this and what software you’ll be using (pre-install the software as well). Can’t decide? We recommend Python. If you don’t already have it, search “python download” or click the link below and fully follow all installation directions. Link: https://www.python.org/downloads/

  3. Take your document, copy (highlight, then click CTRL-C [on Windows], or CMD-C [on Mac]) all the text you typed, and go to ChatGPT (which is the AI that we’ll be using to make this game: https://chatgpt.com/). Paste all the text into the taskbar (where it tells you to enter your prompt). Before sending it, make sure to say “Tell me all the steps and send me all the code required to make the game. Lead me through all the steps, one by one. Make your directions completely beginner intuitive. I already have [insert your programming language/software here] installed." ChatGPT might ask a couple of questions to clarify things. Ask it for directions on what to do and answer anything it asks regarding the game. Make sure to double-check all information before sending it to ChatGPT.

  4. Follow the steps carefully. ChatGPT will send you the code and tell you where to put the code. Don’t be afraid to ask ChatGPT any questions you might have about making the game! You can also contact us with any questions or concerns about our articles or technology.
